In our sightseeing adventures around New York City, New York and Jersey City, New Jersey we discovered so much great street art and murals! We highly recommend walking around as much as you can to discover pieces of art on your own, but we’ve also shared some of our favorites here. We’ve included the artist (when known) and a map of where you can find the murals on your own.

As digital nomads and full time house sitters we have the opportunity to visit cities all around the world.

When we visit a city we want to see as much of it as possible and we’ve learned the best way to do that is to explore it by foot. Walking gives us a chance to see things we’d miss in a car or a bus because we can slow down and look all around us. We’ve discovered so many unique treasures this way! Among them, are street art and murals. We’ve shared a few of our favorites in Athens, Greece and San Francisco, California, and now we want to share some absolutely beautiful art we saw in Jersey City, New Jersey and New York City, New York.

Screw The Average

Our blog is meant to document our journey of continual long-term travel, becoming digital nomads, and pursuing financially independent/retired early (FIRE). It’s full of ideas, tips and solutions. Join us on our journey, as over time we'll share our challenges, our stories, our goals, and our mistakes.

We live our lives with the goal of being better than average. Well, honestly, not just better than average, but within the 90th percentile*. What does this mean? It means when evaluating how we live (resource consumption, our expertise in an area, our travel, our discipline, etc.) we will be better, stronger and higher achieving than at least 90%* of the rest of the world. While not always realistic, we shoot for the stars, because if we don’t make it we’ll at least hit the moon!

There is a story behind this:

During the beginning of his career, Sergio had an amazing work environment with not only leaders in his industry but with leaders and talent who were willing to give him a chance, take him under their wing and challenge him to be great. At one point, while speaking with a man he looked up to, Sergio mentioned that he wanted to achieve what this person had and to be similar to him. His mentor looked at him and very succinctly stated, “Why be me when you can be better than me?”

This stuck with Sergio through his early career and guided him as he made choices and developed his career, life and ambitions. Sergio brought this to our relationship and it stuck with both of us. It has sense merged into the idea of being better than average and being in the 90th percentile*.

We challenge you to screw the average; to push yourself to be in the top 10% and leave nothing at the table!

*We chose the 90th percentile as a placeholder; this is an arbitrary number and can be anything you choose and that is right for you. Maybe an 80th percentile goal is ideal, or maybe 97th percentile is best. The decision is up to the individual, whatever you pick, don’t let this hold you back!
