IIn our research and preparation for our trip to Poland, which included a visit to both Warsaw and Krakow, we learned about Polish Milk Bars. Known as Bar mleczny in Polish, milk bars originated in the late 1800s as government subsidized eateries for workers and they flourished after World War I and then again after World War II.
Many argue that no visit to Poland is complete without time spent in Krakow. It’s described as a magical, fairy tale city that’s not only beautiful but inexpensive and full of great food. For us, traveling first to Warsaw and then continuing south to Krakow, we wanted to see and experience one of Poland’s most visited cities, but we also knew Krakow to be the gateway to the concentration camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Let’s be honest, Warsaw, Poland probably isn’t one of your future top travel destinations... But, you’d be wise to give Warsaw a chance; it’s an up and coming destination that may just blow you away! It certainly took us by surprise, leaving us in awe of the city and its rise from the ashes.

When you think of a country’s capital, the words ‘charm’ and ‘quaint’ aren’t likely to come to mind. However, in one of the most unlikely places, Poland’s capital, Warsaw, you may just find yourself using those descriptors. Warsaw’s Old Town was nothing like we expected it to be!
We like to be prepared so we did our due diligence and researched Warsaw’s public transportation system ahead of time. We feel competent with public transportation in general, and while some cities may be similar to each other, when it comes to the details, every public transportation system and network is different.
We arrived in Vienna, Austria after a short (1 ½ hr) bus ride from Bratislava. We disembarked, strapped on our backpacks, and started to walk into city center. It didn’t take long before we were looking around and up in awe! We couldn’t believe how beautiful the buildings were.
We embarked on this year of travel, knowing that many of the comforts of home we’d grown accustom to wouldn't be available on our trip. Either the sheer circumstance of not being in our own home, or the fact that our bags can only fit so much stuff, meant that we were going to need to manage without a lot of 'stuff' we were used to having for the next year or so. Of course, we knew this going into it, so it wasn't a surprise to us.

We were fortunate enough to be asked to house sit a home, a dog (Mono), and two cats (Tigris and Bella) in the center of Vienna, Austria. So, as the date of our scheduled house sit approached, we started to look for transportation from our current location, Cluj-Napoca, Romania to Vienna, Austria.
Bratislava, Slovakia and our travel plans met, totally by accident (a welcome accident we might add!). Let us tell you the story of how we, Screw The Average, ended up in Bratislava. We'll try to make it quick!
Bratislava offers a great network of trams, trolleybuses, and buses, so the city was only a short trip away. Plus, we’d be able to use public transportation to make our getting around the city easier!
When you think of traveling Europe, Romania probably isn’t in the top five (or even 10) places you think of visiting. However, in our humble opinion, it should be!
We’d argue that a visit to the Transylvania region in Romania isn’t complete without some time spent in Sighisoara. There are many reasons to add this town to your bucket list, just take your pick!
Transylvania and the countryside of Romania called to us, and the road we’d take there was the Transfagarasan Highway (Transfăgărășan in Romanian). A drive on this road isn’t your average road trip; it’s often listed as one of the top road trips in the world...
We'll go out on a 'limb' and say that it isn’t every day that you hear someone talk about visiting Bucharest, Romania, but this Eastern-European capital, in our opinion, is a hidden gem. Take our word for it; this is a place you’re going to want to visit! Moreover, visit soon, since it won’t be long before this wonderful city becomes a huge tourist destination
We rented a studio a couple of miles outside of ‘Old Town’, so sightseeing and nightlife was just a metro or tram ride away. We found that public transportation in Bucharest is extensive, frequent, and easy to use.
We spent a month living in Bucharest, Romania and a few weeks traveling through Transylvania. During our time there, we learned how to get by as tourists and as ‘locals’. With the goal of experiencing the country to its fullest, with everything it has to offer, yet saving money where possible, we learned a lot about Bucharest and Transylvania, Romania.
The Schengen Agreement was signed on June 14, 1985 in Schengen, Luxembourg and supplemented in 1990, by the Schengen Convention.
Our travels brought us to Oslo, Norway. We were excited to explore a new country and spend time in Scandinavia.
